Question about Phase Names
« on: December 16, 2020, 03:49:22 PM »
Greetings,

I am using PHREEQC interactive to perform some speciation calculations and obtain phases. I am using phreeqc.dat database and I noticed some phase names have a letter in parenthesis after the phase name. Could anyone tell me what the significance of this notation is? I recognize (g) for gaseous phase but there are some I am not confident I know the meaning of. I am leery of any notations I don't know the meaning of and I don't want to make any mistakes due to a lack of understanding.

For example: Al(OH)3(a)  or Sepiolite(d)

Thanks,
John

(a) means amorphous. (d) means disordered, or less crystalline. (14A) refers to 14 angstrom spacing of clay planes. FeS(ppt), precipitated, indicates an initial precipitate that is less crystalline. Zn(OH)2(e) indicates a specific crystal form, epsilon.
